This sculpture is installed at the back of the flag in the entrance of the Distinguished Service Memorial Park in Stuart, Florida. The idea behind this piece came to me from thinking of the great sacrifice made by modern women warriors who leave their own children to protect ours. I could not think of a bigger sacrifice. Nor could I comprehend how someone was able to do this. My only answer was their unconditional love of their country. That is why I made this relief to depict a woman saying goodbye to her child to go to war. The enormity of the weight of this decision is represented by the size of the backpack as compared to the size of her body. That is why I called it “Unconditional.”
