Mountain of Grief - Carved Marble

This sculpture resided in my head for 48 years. It commemorates the unfathomable pain my wife and I felt when losing our oldest child to cancer.
This sculpture won first prize at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. With over 800 submissions by 350 artists, the juror selected 137 works for the show "Treasure Coast Creates". The winners were announced at the opening reception on May 26, 2023.
I carved it out of a 250 lb. block of marble purchased from the widow of a fellow sculptor. Carving it for months was somehow therapeutic.
